Many people who are considering treating themselves to the new Amazon Kindle 4 entry level ebook reader seem to have two primary considerations. The lack of a physical keyboard or touch screen functionality is the first thing that many wonder about. The other point of interest is usually whether they should opt for “special offers” or pay a little extra for a Kindle without advertising.
It’s worth thinking about just how frequently you are likely to input text. When reading a book, the page turn buttons are all that’s required. Text entry is most likely something that will only be necessary for most people when they are choosing a new book to read on Amazon’s Kindle store. When text entry is required, a virtual keyboard is called up by pressing one of the buttons at the bottom of the Kindle. The 5-way central toggle switch is then used to select and input characters. It’s not as bad as it sounds, especially when you bear in mind that predictive text has been enabled.
When it comes to “special offers” or not, going for the Kindle with special offers – in the first instance at least – seems like a smart move. If, you find that the ads irritate you, you can turn them off on the “manage my Kindle” page. However, this will cost you an additional $30. You can’t do this in reverse – which is why it makes sense to try the Kindle with Special offers and see if you like it or not before committing to spend a further $30.
